Who is Metro Boomin?
Metro Boomin, whose real name is Leland Tyler Wayne, is an American record producer, songwriter, DJ and record executive.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on 16 September 1993, he is known for bringing dark atmospheres, powerful bass, sharp drums and cinematic melodies into mainstream hip-hop and trap music.
He developed from a producer creating instrumentals for other rappers into an artist who releases albums under his own name, headlines major concerts and shapes the entire visual and musical identity of his projects.
Metro Boomin’s career also represents the increasing visibility of producers in modern hip-hop. His recognisable producer tags have become cultural signatures that are often as famous as the songs themselves.
How old is Metro Boomin?
Metro Boomin was born on 16 September 1993.
He will celebrate his birthday six days before the Istanbul concert and will be 33 years old when he performs at KüçükÇiftlik Park on 22 September 2026.
Where is Metro Boomin from?
Metro Boomin was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, in the United States.
Atlanta’s hip-hop scene, however, played an essential role in the development of his career. As a teenager, he began sending beats to rappers he met online and travelled regularly between St. Louis and Atlanta to build studio connections.
After graduating from high school, he moved to Atlanta to study at Morehouse College. As his music career became increasingly demanding, he paused his education and focused on production.
How did Metro Boomin start making music?
During his teenage years, Metro Boomin initially considered becoming a rapper. He began producing beats because he needed original instrumentals for his own songs.
Using a computer purchased by his mother and the music production software FL Studio, he taught himself how to produce music. His habit of creating new beats every day during high school helped him develop a large catalogue at a young age.
Connecting with artists online and becoming involved in Atlanta’s studio network marked the beginning of his professional career. His work with artists associated with Gucci Mane, OJ da Juiceman, Young Thug and especially Future strengthened his position within the Atlanta rap scene.
Where does the name Metro Boomin come from?
The “Metro” part of his stage name comes from a nickname he used during his teenage years. The “Boomin” part is widely reported to have been suggested by rapper OJ da Juiceman during the early stages of his career.
The name later became closely associated with the powerful bass and expansive sound of his productions. Metro Boomin is now more than a stage name—it is one of the most recognisable production brands in contemporary trap music.
Metro Boomin’s producer tags
The producer tags placed at the beginning of Metro Boomin’s songs have played an important role in his global recognition.
The phrase “If Young Metro don’t trust you…”, voiced by Future, and the “Metro Boomin want some more…” tag performed by Young Thug allow listeners to recognise his presence within the opening seconds of a track.
His producer tags have appeared on numerous major hip-hop releases, most notably Kanye West’s “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1.”
Metro Boomin is considered one of the producers who transformed the producer tag from a technical signature into an exciting and memorable part of the song itself.
What type of music does Metro Boomin make?
Metro Boomin’s productions are recognised for their dark melodies, deep bass, sharp hi-hat rhythms and sense of cinematic space.
Although his instrumentals are powerful, they do not completely overwhelm the vocalist. He adapts the structure of the beat to each rapper’s voice and style of delivery.
The atmospheric and melancholic sound of his work with Future, for example, differs from the colder and more minimalist approach heard on his projects with 21 Savage.
Metro Boomin’s music is commonly associated with:
- Powerful 808 bass
- Dark and cinematic melodies
- Sharp trap drums
- Minimal arrangements that make effective use of silence
- Suspenseful introductions
- Beats designed around the rapper’s voice
- A consistent atmosphere across an entire album
- Transitions and narratives inspired by film soundtracks
This approach has allowed Metro Boomin to develop beyond a beatmaker who produces individual hits. He often acts as the musical director responsible for the complete sound world of a project.
Future and Metro Boomin
One of the most important creative partnerships in Metro Boomin’s career is his long-running collaboration with Future.
Their work on songs such as “Mask Off,” “Low Life,” “Thought It Was a Drought,” “Jumpman,” “Wicked” and “Where Ya At” helped define the sound of mainstream hip-hop and trap during the 2010s.
Metro Boomin and Future continued their collaboration with two major joint albums in 2024:
- We Don’t Trust You
- We Still Don’t Trust You
“Like That,” featuring Kendrick Lamar, debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It became Metro Boomin’s first number-one song on the chart as a credited lead artist.
21 Savage and Metro Boomin
Another creative partnership central to Metro Boomin’s musical identity is his work with 21 Savage.
Released in 2016, Savage Mode became an important modern trap project due to its dark, minimalist and threatening production style.
The pair continued their partnership with Savage Mode II in 2020. Featuring narration by Morgan Freeman, the album combined music with cinematic storytelling.
Notable songs from Metro Boomin and 21 Savage’s collaborations include:
- No Heart
- X
- Runnin
- Glock in My Lap
- Rich N***a Shit
- My Choppa Hate N***as
- Slidin
- Brand New Draco
These projects demonstrate Metro Boomin’s ability to build a cohesive album world specifically designed around another artist’s identity.
Not All Heroes Wear Capes
Metro Boomin released his debut solo studio album, Not All Heroes Wear Capes, in 2018.
The project featured Travis Scott, 21 Savage, Gunna, Swae Lee, Offset, Drake, Young Thug and Kodak Black. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
Notable tracks from the album include:
- Space Cadet
- 10 Freaky Girls
- Don’t Come Out the House
- Overdue
- No More
- Dreamcatcher
- Only You
- Borrowed Love
Not All Heroes Wear Capes established Metro Boomin as more than a producer supplying beats to guest artists. The project showed his ability to bring different voices together within one cohesive album narrative.
Heroes & Villains
Released in 2022, Heroes & Villains became one of the defining projects of Metro Boomin’s career.
The album brought together John Legend, Future, Chris Brown, Don Toliver, Travis Scott, The Weeknd, 21 Savage, Young Thug, A$AP Rocky, Takeoff and Gunna.
A short film starring Metro Boomin, Morgan Freeman, LaKeith Stanfield, Gunna and Young Thug was also released as part of the album’s promotional campaign.
Important tracks on Heroes & Villains include:
- On Time
- Superhero
- Too Many Nights
- Trance
- Metro Spider
- Creepin’
- Niagara Falls
- Around Me
- Umbrella
- Walk Em Down
- Feel the Fiyaaaah
Featuring The Weeknd and 21 Savage, “Creepin’” became one of the most commercially successful songs of Metro Boomin’s career.
Heroes & Villains debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Metro Boomin served as the executive producer of the soundtrack for the 2023 animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
The soundtrack featured artists including Swae Lee, Lil Wayne, Nas, A$AP Rocky, Future, Don Toliver, James Blake, 21 Savage, Offset and JID.
Some of its most notable tracks include:
- Am I Dreaming
- Calling
- Annihilate
- Hummingbird
- Self Love
- All the Way Live
- Danger
- Home
Metro Boomin also provided a brief voice appearance for the Metro Spider-Man character inspired by the producer.
The project demonstrated his ability to combine hip-hop production with film music, animation and visual storytelling.
Has Metro Boomin won a Grammy?
Metro Boomin is a Grammy-nominated producer, but he has not won a Grammy as of 2026.
According to the Recording Academy, he has received seven Grammy nominations, including:
- Album of the Year – Music of the Spheres
- Producer of the Year, Non-Classical
- Best Rap Album – Heroes & Villains
- Best Rap Album – We Don’t Trust You
- Best Rap Song – Like That
- Best Rap Performance – Like That
- Best Melodic Rap Performance – We Still Don’t Trust You
For this reason, he should be described as a Grammy-nominated producer, not a Grammy-winning producer.

What are Metro Boomin concerts like?
Metro Boomin’s concerts are closer to high-energy hip-hop and trap DJ shows than traditional rap performances.
Tracks are played through fast transitions supported by powerful sound systems, large LED screens, dark visual designs, lighting effects and cinematic video sequences.
Metro Boomin occasionally uses the microphone to direct the audience, but the centre of the performance is the production, transitions and the crowd reacting to a continuous series of major hip-hop hits.
Visitors to the KüçükÇiftlik Park concert can expect powerful bass and a highly energetic audience. The exact standing arrangement will become clear when the ticket categories and venue plan are announced.
